As if getting beaten at home by their hated rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in Week 1 wasn’t bad enough, the Seattle Seahawks now have to hit the road for Week 2 with a severely banged-up secondary. Most significantly, they look like they’ll be without their two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon when they hit the field at Acrisure Stadium this weekend.
Witherspoon injured his knee partway through the final quarter last Sunday. While he finished the game against the Niners, he was unable to practice all this week.
“His adrenaline’s pumping like crazy, and it just shows you he’s tough as nails. You wouldn’t have thought it or known that he was dealing with it as the game went on,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said about Witherspoon finishing the game. While he is doubtful to play on Sunday, Witherspoon isn’t expected to be out long-term.
Elsewhere, second-round pick and rookie Nick Emmanwori, who was slotted in as the team’s third safety, suffered a high ankle sprain on the very first drive of his NFL career. Hopefully not a harbinger of things to come for him. He is definitely out for the Pittsburgh game, but the team is holding off putting him on injured reserve, which would force him to miss four games.
Meanwhile, another safety, Julian Love, is expected to suit up and play on Sunday. Love is also banged up, with an injured groin that has kept him off the field since Thursday.
Degenerate Spin: Yikes for the Seahawks. Time to get in on the Aaron Rodgers and/or DK Metcalf prop plays, as who knows who will be in the secondary to cover Pittsburgh’s receivers come game time on Sunday.
