The injury bug continues to bite the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners’ 17-13 Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks is turning out to be about as costly a win as you’re going to get. First, starting tight end George Kittle barely played in the game before injuring his hamstring badly enough that he’s expected to be out multiple weeks (three to five weeks is the current prognosis). Now the news on quarterback Brock Purdy’s health could be almost as bad.
Despite playing the full game last Sunday and playing quite well (26-35, 277 yards, two touchdowns), Purdy suffered two injuries in the game. He hurt his shoulder on an incomplete pass and injured his toe (worse than the shoulder) at an indetermined point in the game. After originally stating they’d give Purdy the week to see how he heals, the team is counting on him not suiting up on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
“I think it’s a long shot,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said when asked if Purdy was expected to play, and went on to say that it was possible that these injuries could keep Purdy out of action for multiple weeks.
This would leave new addition Mac Jones as the man taking the snaps for the foreseeable future.
“I like Mac a lot,” San Francisco defensive end Nick Bosa stated. “Getting to know him this camp, and I think he’s really popped on tape throughout camp. If Mac does start, I think it’s a little more advantageous for him being earlier in the year since he’s gotten some real reps recently, and he’s not 10 weeks into the season taking only scout team [snaps], getting pinballed around by the D-line and scout team. I think that’s a bright side.”
Degenerate Spin: Bad news if you have Purdy on your fantasy team – snap up Jones if he’s available. As for the betting side of things, the line has moved from San Francisco -4.5 to -3.5 with this news. The Niners have lots of other players questionable for Sunday as well. This might be a good spot to take the home dog Saints.
