While Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott wasn’t able to dodge the spit, the Philadelphia Eagles and Jalen Carter were able to dodge a bullet. The NFL announced today that the Eagles’ star defensive tackle Carter will not be suspended for spitting on Prescott at the start of the heated rivals game last week.
The league’s rationale for this ruling is that since Carter didn’t participate in any actual game action before he was ejected after deciding to empty his saliva glands on Prescott, he, in effect, has already served a one-game suspension for the incident.
However, while Carter’s poor judgment won’t cost him any additional game action, it will cost him in dollars and cents. The third-year defensive tackle will not be paid for Game 1, costing him $57,222. So a precedent has been set – spitting will cost you a game suspension and a hefty chunk of change.
This is part of the league’s efforts to clean up the game’s image and improve the league’s brand. The powers-that-be will be keeping an eye on all things sportsmanship, and, in their words, will have “zero tolerance for acts that demean the game.”
The Pro-Bowler apologized for his actions after the game on Thursday, saying it was “a mistake that happened on my side, and it just won’t happen again.” Whether or not the Eagles will add additional punishment on Carter will be kept under wraps.
“I’m going to keep everything that I do with him private, regardless of if you see it on Sunday or not,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said. “Everything, every conversation, whether it’s a personal conversation, a disciplinary thing, all those things will always be handled privately. I just think that’s the way to go about doing team business and when you’re doing things with a football team.”
Degenerate Spin: This is good news if you have Carter on your fantasy team (not that defensive players are that big of a deal in fantasy). As for gambling, the Eagles are a 1.5-point dog traveling to Kansas City on Sunday, so this decision could make the Eagles a sneaky good dog in that spot.
