Niners to Be Without Kittle, Maybe Purdy for Week 2

Niners to Be Without Kittle, Maybe Purdy for Week 2

The San Francisco 49ers started their season off with a 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, but it was a costly victory. Due to injuries sustained in the game, the team could be without offensive engines Brock Purdy and George Kittle when they go to battle Sunday in New Orleans.

We’ll deal with the certainty first – tight end Kittle will be out for an extended period of time after injuring his hamstring this past Sunday. He played sparingly in the game (but long enough to get injured, unfortunately), so it’s no surprise that he’s out. However, the three-to-five weeks projection for the length of his absence is a blow to the team.

While the six-time Pro Bowler is on the sidelines, Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges are next on the depth chart for San Francisco.

Who will be delivering the ball to these backup tight ends is up in the air, as well. Purdy suffered two injuries against the Seahawks: to his throwing shoulder and his toe, with the toe being the more serious of the two. The team will rest him during the week and see how he is as we get closer to Sunday. If he isn’t able to go, backup Mac Jones will be pressed into action.

“He’s gotten really used to what we do,” Coach Mike Shanahan said of Jones. “He had a good week of practice last week picking up really right where he left off. If he has to go this week, he’ll lead the guys, the guys will believe in him, and I know he’ll do his job at a high level.”

Degenerate Spin: Hold off hitting the San Francisco -4.5 line for this coming Sunday against New Orleans until we know if Purdy is ready to roll. Missing him and Kittle would be a blow – especially on the road. The Saints do suck, though.
