The UFC stays on the road this week for Noche UFC from San Antonio, Texas. Main eventing is another Fighting Nerd – Jean Silva – who looks to right the ship for the team against Diego Lopes. Prelim Pick of the Week: Noche UFC
UFC Middleweight Fight: Zach Reese v Sedriques Dumas
Start Time: Saturday (9/13) 3:00pm EST (ESPN+)
There’s a lot of reason to like the favorite in the early middleweight fight on Saturday. For one, Zachary Reese is a known finisher. He has solid finishing with both his hands and his ground game. On top of that, his last time out he showed that he has the ability to push that pace for a full 15 minutes.
He’ll be up against someone who is quite a bit less developed in both of those skills and with quite a bit less cardio. Sedriques Dumas might have some of the finishes that you see from Reese, but many of them were due to poor fight IQ moments from his opponents. The great kickboxer Matej Penaz for some reason decided to grapple him, and Cody Brundage kept jumping guillotines. Reese should be able to deal with him in either realm, which has me not worried about his gameplan.
In addition to the fighting skills, there is the behind the scenes issues for this one as well. Dumas has assured media that his ankle monitor will be off in time for him to travel to San Antonio, but it was the reason that his last fight got cancelled. When you also add the legal trouble he’s still dealing with and the financial strain of it all, I’m not sure I’d want my money backing Dumas at this point.
