One week into the season, and the New York Giants already have a quarterback controversy on their hands. After an ignominious debut performance for the Giants in Week 1, Russell Wilson is already feeling the Big Apple heat.
Wilson only has himself to blame for this, after quarterbacking the Giants to a 21-6 loss on Sunday to the Washington Commanders. In the game, Wilson went 17-37 passing for 168 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions (a positive!).
This can’t have come as a total shock, as despite a solid year last season in Pittsburgh, the 36-year-old Wilson isn’t the same player as he was during his Seattle Seahawks heyday. However, the Giants hoped he’d man the position adequately enough while rookie backup Jaxson Dart watches and learns. Now Wilson may not even be taking snaps in Week 2.
“We’re going to get home and look at our game,” Giants head coach Brian Daboll replied when asked after the game if he’s considering starting his rookie next week. “We’re talking about after every game. … I’ve got confidence in Russ,” Daboll continued. “We’ll go back, evaluate the tape. This game isn’t on Russell Wilson. It’s not on Russell Wilson. Let me make that clear. I have confidence in Russ. We have to do a better job all the way around.”
A rookie breathing down his neck isn’t fazing Wilson – at least not publicly.
“No, I just focus on what we can control. I thought we competed our butts off [Sunday],” Wilson said after Sunday’s loss. “That was a physical game. I thought we left it all on the field. We gave it our all physically. You stand tall in the midst of that game. Battling through it and trying to find a way to win. Like I said, they stopped us in the red zone. I think that was the name of this game. We had, I think, eight or nine possessions; two of them were down in the red zone. We didn’t capitalize on those, so that’s what we got to do.”
Degenerate Spin: The Giants are on the road next Sunday, facing their hated rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, who looked better than expected in their Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys are currently a -3.5 favorite. That number looks mighty enticing to me, considering the Giants’ performance on Sunday and their quarterback question mark.
