MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 7
Cleveland Guardians vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 12:10 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Cleveland gets first hacks in the matinee game Sunday, and they have really been struggling at the plate. On the season, they rank 25th in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first inning. However, they are even worse across the entire game. They rank 27th in runs per game and are one of just four teams that have not cracked the 4.00 runs per game mark. It won’t get any easier for them on Sunday with Drew Rasmussen on the bump. He carries a 2.74 ERA into action on Sunday and is coming off an August where he was even better. He put up a 1.53 ERA in the month of August which included a solid start and an NRFI against these very Guardians.
Tampa Bay is not nearly as bad at the plate as their counterparts. They rank right around the middle of the pack in most of the major offensive metrics. We’re going to trust this first frame to stay quiet on the back of Parker Messick. The Guardians rookie is entering just the fourth start of his career, but he’s been petty solid so far. In 17.1 innings, he’s allowed just four earned runs (a 2.08 ERA). Only the high powered offense of the Red Sox really got to him at all, so I expect him to cruise in this one.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 7: No (-115)
Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 2:35 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, we get another team who has some miserable numbers in the first inning. The Astros rank 27th in the majors in first inning runs and haven’t scored in the first inning for nine straight games. They’ll be trying to change that pattern against Patrick Corbin. He’s faded a bit since his hot start, but we’re still seeing glimmers of the old version of him. He’s just one game removed from an 8.0 inning scoreless start against an Angels team that has been solid. He should be able to give the Astros their tenth straight empty first frame.
Looking to lock down the bottom of the first is Luis Garcia. He has just one start to the year for the Astros, but he looked like he had some really solid stuff in there. He faced the aforementioned Angels and managed to breeze through the first three innings. While he ran into a little trouble in the fourth, he otherwise just put up empty frames for 6.0 innings. Texas is in the bottom third of the league in both run scoring and first inning run scoring. That is enough for me to trust him to do it again.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 7: No (-120)
