Underdog Fantasy – DFS Picks for September 1

Parker Messick – Higher than 4.5 Strikeouts

Messick has been nasty in the first starts of his young career. In each of his two starts, he’s logged six strikeouts and worked deep into the game. It may be harder for him to work deep into the game with the Red Sox at the plate, but there is another reason to like this projection. The Red Sox swing and miss a lot. They rank 26th in strikeout on the year and have fanned a bunch recently. As a result, he should be able to find five in this one.

Kai-Wei Teng – Higher than 3.5 Strikeouts

This pick is not exactly an attractive one on the surface. Kai-Wei Teng has been hammered in just about every appearance he’s had. His ERA sits at a robust 8.78 and he’s yet to work more than 5.0 innings. However, what I like about this one is that he’s getting a huge step down in terms of competition. After facing the Padres in back-to-back appearances, he gets the Rockies for this one. That should help him work a bit deeper into the game. The Rockies are also 29th in the league in strikeouts, which should help even if he can’t go deep into this one. And even if his outing is short again, he’s had four strikeouts in three of his four appearances this year.

Drake Baldwin – Higher than 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs

Baldwin has been on a nice run lately for the Braves. Even without being in the lineup on Sunday, he managed to hit a go ahead two-run home run and put the Braves ahead for good. He’s now been higher than this projection in seven of the last eight games he’s played. The only outlier is a game where he pinch hit only. He’ll also have the benefit of facing a righty in this one. Colin Rea is on the rubber in this one fresh off of a start where he allowed seven runs in 4.2 innings.
