MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 1

Cleveland Guardians vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Guardians will get first hacks in this one and they haven’t exactly been an offensive force this season. They currently rank 22nd in first inning scoring and haven’t scored a first inning run in four games. Their offense hasn’t been all that potent lately even after the first inning. They’ve scored just 17 runs over their last five games (3.4 runs per game) and that’s despite winning four of them. Now they’ll face Brayan Bello, whose recent run now has his ERA under 3.00. He’s allowed just three runs in his last three starts, which spans 20.0 innings. That comes out to a 1.35 ERA in that stretch. With numbers like that, you have to imagine he can keep the Guardians quiet here.

The bottom of the inning is where the sweat comes in for this one. The Red Sox are a top ten team when it comes to scoring in the first inning or across the game. They’re just a whisker outside of the top ten in home runs as well. However, we’re going to put our faith in rookie Parker Messick. In two career starts (13.2 innings), he’s allowed just a single run, which comes out to a 0.66 ERA in the small sample. He’s also only allowed 11 hits, one walk, and has stuck out 12. His stuff looks for real and against a team with a lot of strikeouts, it should play up.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 1: No (-130)

Athletics vs. St. Louis Cardinals

First Pitch – 2:15 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Athletics continue to surprise with some decent batting. They are middle of the pack when it comes to scoring runs, which isn’t an automatic fade. Then again, they’re facing Sonny Gray in this one, which should be much harder for them to get on the board early. He’s allowed just one run in three of his five starts in the month of August. Two of those starts came against big offenses in the Dodgers and the Cubs. The Athletics should be a few steps behind that and Gray should be able to give us three quick outs.

The bottom of the inning is another surprise out of Sacramento. Luis Morales has been nasty for them in his four start sample since coming up. In four starts (20.2 innings), he’s allowed just two runs – which comes out to a 0.87 ERA. His strikeout stuff has trended up as well, picking up a combined 13 strikeouts in the last two outing. He’ll be aided in this one by the Cardinals who are the worst team in the majors at scoring in the first inning. Their 0.30 first inning runs per game are well behind the Rockies and should be a path to a clean first frame.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 1: No (-125)
