MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 31
New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We used this series to kick of the weekend with an NRFI and it cashed. We’re doubling down on Sunday with yet another from Rate Field. While it does scare us a bit that the Yankees are getting first swings, the White Sox have had some surprisingly competent pitching performances this year. One of the pitchers responsible for those outings is Martin Perez. He’s coming off back-to-back starts without allowing an earned run. In the month of August, he posted a 0.57 ERA and has stuck out 14 in 15.2 innings. With a run like that, we can trust him to get us three quick outs.
Luis Gil gets the ball second in this one and he’s similarly on a really nice run. He stumbled out of the gate coming back from injury, but since he’s found his rhythm. Now, he’s allowed one earned in each of his last three starts – dropping his ERA to just 3.75. Throwing against the White Sox should help that quite a bit. They rank 26th in the majors in runs and are one of just five teams who are not averaging at least 4.00 runs per game. Gil should be able to keep them at bay for the whole game, but at the very least the first frame should stay clean.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 31: No (-110)
Los Angeles Angels vs. Houston AStros
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – FOX
The Angels get first hacks in this one and they have been struggling with the bats. They have scored just ten total runs in the last four games (2.5 runs per game), and that’s dropped them to 20th in the majors in runs per game. It doesn’t get any easier for them with Hunter Brown toeing the rubber. He carries a 2.37 ERA in action on Sunday and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game since July 20th. Look for Brown to get started quick and get us a quick first inning.
Jose Soriano isn’t on quite the run that Brown is, but he’s been good in his own right. He’s had scoreless starts in two of his last three games with one of those coming against the Dodgers. He went 6.0 innings in that game and allowed just two hits. Now he gets an Astros team that has struggled at the plate. They’re in the bottom third of the league when it comes to run scoring and rank all the way down at 26th when it comes to scoring in the first. Look for Soriano to extend that misfortune for them.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 31: No (-135)
