MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 30

New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s always a little dicey when we start off our NRFI play with the Yankees at the plate. I recognize that they are one of the best hitting teams in the majors and have scored double digit runs in three straight games. However, I am also aware that Shane Smith has been on a bit of a heater. The White Sox righty has kept two of his last three opponents scoreless – posting a 2.63 ERA in the month of August. In the month, he was also stellar in the first inning. He allowed a first inning run in just one of those starts and otherwise breezed right through them.

The bottom of the inning is a bit easier for people to get around on. The White Sox are not hitting well lately. Not only are they not putting up the double figures that the Yankees have, but they’ve only tallied 11 runs total in their last four games. Now they face Cam Schlittler, who is really coming in to his own as of late. He hasn’t allowed a run in over 13 innings and has a 1.63 ERA in the month of August. If someone out there is going to disrupt this run he’s on, I doubt it’ll be the White Sox.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 30: No (-115)

Seattle Mariners vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Progressive Field –Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – FOX

This is yet another game where I’m loving the pitching matchup. We get started with Gavin Williams on the bump with a 3.36 ERA on the year. While that’s already a respectable number, his August has blown that out of the water. He posted a 2.73 ERA in the month and has struck out 26 batter in 26.1 innings. The Mariners are a middle of the pack team with the bats. They rank in the middle third in just about every offensive category worth tracking. The one outlier though is the strikeouts. They rank 28th in that category and that’s where Williams should be able to pitch himself out, should he run into any trouble.

The bottom of the inning, we get some real slow bats. Despite being on a nice winning streak, the Guardians have scored just 12 runs in their last six games. That’s not a huge surprise as their run scoring has been putrid all year long. They rank 28th in runs per game and are one of just five teams below 4.00 per game. All of that is great news for Logan Gilbert, who toes the rubber for the Mariners on Saturday. He’s held his opponents to two or less runs in three of his last four games. He’s also coming off a 13 strikeout performance over the Athletics and should be riding that high early here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 30: No (-130)
