MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 29

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game gets kicking with the Tigers at the dish, which is a sentence that strikes fear in any NRFI bettor’s heart. They’ve been a top ten team in nearly every offensive category that could make our lives miserable with this play. However, I’m still going to put my faith in Seth Lugo on Friday. While he has been hit around a bit lately, he is still rocking less than a 4.00 ERA on the year. Additionally, his last game out was against these same Tigers. Even though he got tagged in that one, it was not the first time through the order. He gave us a quiet first and allowed just one run over the first three innings. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tigers get to him again, but I trust that he’ll come out of the gate strong.

In the bottom of the first are some bats that are far less to worry about. The Royals are currently just one of five teams with less than 4.00 runs per game on the year. They also rank 24th in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first inning. None of that should be made easier by Chris Paddack, who gets the ball in this one. His last start was against the Royals and he held them to just one run over 5.0 innings. That run didn’t come until the 4th inning. As a result, I trust that we can get three quick outs here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 29: No (-105)

San Diego Padres vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

Toeing the rubber in the top of the first will be Zebby Matthews. Perhaps that’s not a name that NRFI hunters go in search of, but the youngster has been pretty solid for the Twins. The righty has allowed more than three runs in just one of his August starts and has really racked up the strikeouts. In the month of August, he’s put up 11.64 strikeouts per nine innings. To help our NRFI action along, the Padres have been pretty terrible at the plate. Despite being in first place in the NL West, the Padres rank 23rd in runs scored this year – and I expect them to struggle with the power stuff of Matthews.

The Twins are actually a slot lower than the Padres when it comes to run scoring. While their 24th place spot in that category is bad, they are actually worse in the first inning – where they rank 27th in the majors. Now they’ll have to try to change that tune against Nestor Cortes. Cortes is fresh off his best start of the year. He went 6.0 scoreless last time out, only allowing one baserunner to the Dodgers. After a showcase like that, this should be a cakewalk.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 29: No (-120)
