MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 17

Miami Marlins vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

One of the easiest pitchers to follow on an NRFI quest is Garrett Crochet. We get him on the bump this afternoon against the Marlins. He had a bit of a rough outing last time out against the Astros, but hadn’t allowed more than two runs in a game since June prior to that. He actually only allowed five total runs in the month of July. Facing the Marlins should be good to get him back on the right track. Miami has scored just ten runs over their last three games. They are a below average team in both first inning run scoring and run scoring in general. There should be no early issues for Crochet.

The bottom of the inning might be a bit of a sweat with the bats we’re going to see. The Red Sox are a top five team in the league when it comes to scoring runs. Despite that, they are actually in the same boat as the Marlins in their recent stretch. They’ve put up just ten runs over their last three games, which is five runs behind what their average would dictate. All of that should help Janson Junk, who is also looking to get back on track. After starting hot, he’s run into a couple of juggernauts with the bats and given him trouble. His 4.06 ERA is respectable though and we just need three outs from him here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 17: No (-135)

Texas Rangers vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 1:37 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

We played the NRFI on this series on Saturday and cashed. Although there was 14 runs scored in the game, Patrick Corbin and Eric Lauer gave us an empty first frame. Now we’re doubling down with a pitching matchup that I think is better.

The Blue Jays have Jose Berrios starting on Sunday. He’s fresh off a solid start against the Cubs where he went 5.1 innings and held them scoreless. The Cubs are one of the best hitting teams out there, so it’ll be even easier when the Rangers come to town. They rank 25th in run scoring and are in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring.

The Blue Jays have been better at scoring, but have really struggled in the first inning. They rank 7th in run scoring, but 28th in scoring in the first inning – only ahead of the Cardinals and Rockies. That won’t be an easier task with Nathan Eovaldi on the hill. Eovaldi is a top three option right now for the AL Cy Young with a 1.71 ERA. Since the July kicked off (seven starts), he’s allowed just seven earned runs and I doubt one will come early against Toronto.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 17: No (-120)
