MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 15
Atlanta Braves vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Braves get first crack in this one, and their offense just has not been good this year. Despite taking two of three from the Mets – including the last two – the fact of the matter is still that they rank 19th in run scoring. They are also a below average team when it comes to scoring in the first inning. That’ll help out second-year starter Joey Cantillo who has had his ups and downs this year. He’s coming off a solid start though, where he held the White Sox to just one run in 5.2 innings. In that game, he allowed just six total baserunners. Although I think the Braves may eventually get to him, he should be able to get the first three outs unscathed.
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll see a team that is actually struggling much more at the dish. Although they are five games above .500, the Guardians rank 26th in the league in scoring. They are still one of just five teams that aren’t averaging at least 4.00 runs per game. They’ll have to deal with Braves rookie Hurston Waldrep, who has been sensational since being called up. In two appearances, he’s pitched 11.2 innings and allowed just two runs. That comes out to a 1.54 ERA on the year. Both teams that he beat were in the top half of the league in run scoring, so this should be even easier for him.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 15: No (-115)
Chicago White Sox vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
The second of our two NRFI plays for Friday has two pieces that I really like. The first of which is Noah Cameron on the bump. He’s coming into action with a 2.52 ERA. He’s held three of his last six opponents scoreless and has only allowed 10 total runs in that stretch. That means he’s actually been quite a bit better lately, with a 2.18 ERA over that time. Facing the White Sox should only ease the task at hand for Cameron. They rank 27th in the majors in run scoring and have scored just 10 runs in the last three games (3.33 per game).
The second reason I like this NRFI is just how bad the Royals bats have been. They’re actually a spot lower than the White Sox in the run scoring rankings. They looked a little better against Nationals’ pitching, but the White Sox are bringing Aaron Civale to the table here. He got shelled in two of his last five games – both being to his old squad in Cleveland. However, in the other three games, he did not give up a single earned run. With a spike in strikeouts numbers as well, he should be able to keep this frame clean for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 15: No (-105)
