MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 14

Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 1:05 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mariners are coming to the plate first in this one. Although they have been a top 10 team when it comes to scoring runs, they are a middle of the pack team when it comes to scoring early in the game. That’s part of the reason that I think Tomoyuki Sugano can keep them quiet. He has gotten back to where he was early in the season. He has a 3.00 ERA in this month and has held two of his last three opponents to just one run. We’ve seen his strikeouts tick up as well. With Seattle ranking 27th in the majors in strikeouts, Sugano should be able to get us three quick ones.

Baltimore is much less of a threat to come in and score early in this one. They rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored and are a below average team in the first inning. Now, some of this play involves a bit of faith in Logan Evans, but I’m willing to give him that faith. Despite a couple of rough outings recently, he has kept that first frame clear two out of the last three games. Additionally, he’s faced much better lineups than this Baltimore one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 14: No (+105)

Detroit Tigers vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

Our first NRFI selection of the week relies on some sleepy hitting and some under the radar pitchers. This game does not. This game is all about the big pitchers.

Bailey Ober is the first to the hill. His surface stats aren’t much to write home about, but he’s still the same pitcher who posted wild numbers early in the year. We saw him dial in last time out when he held the Royals to just one run. The Tigers might be a better hitting team, but they have also seen some hard times lately. They scored just nine runs in the series with the White Sox and saw plenty of pitchers worse than Ober.

In the bottom of the inning, we get assumed AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. He’s rocking a 2.35 ERA at this stage in the season, which is second amongst qualified starters. He’s also third in strikeouts. Last time he faced the Twins, he held them scoreless over 7.0 innings. He also fanned 13 in the process.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 14: No (-145)
