MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 9
Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 1:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, we have the Marlins coming to the plate. They’ve been a below average team in the first inning. In fact, they rank in the bottom half of the league when it comes to scoring in the opening frame. They also aren’t much better offensively over the course of the entrie game. Now they’ll have to figure out top Braves prospect, Hurston Waldrep, who was nasty for the Braves in the Speedway game. After the rain pushed the game until Sunday, he got the re-start and went 5.2 innings. In that outing, he allowed just one earned run and struck out four. Especially with limited film out there on him, I expect the Marlins to struggle out of the gate.
The bottom of the inning sees a Braves team that is largely disappointing at the plate. They rank 23rd in the majors in scoring, and have been on a brutal stretch lately. In their last five games, they’ve put up just 16 runs (or 3.2 per game). Even that number is a bit high as half of those came from their lone win in that stretch. We’ll trust in Ryan Gusto to keep them quiet for three outs here. Gusto will be making his Marlins debut here after being traded over from the Astros. The Marlins liked what they saw in his last outing with 6.0 innings and just one run allowed. If he throws anything like that here, he should breeze through this Braves lineup.

Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Royals are always a good team to look to on the NRFI. For one, they are miserable at the plate this year. They rank 29th in the league in run scoring with just 3.70 per game. They scored in the first inning of Friday’s game, but that is far from the norm. Prior to that game, they had not scored in seven straight first innings. Bailey Ober has been on a rough patch, but this is really more of a fade of the Royals than it is a tail of his skills. However, he had a great May where he held a 2.78 ERA. If he could tap into that a bit, there would be even less of a sweat.
The bottom of the inning, despite the better bats of Minnesota, should be almost no sweat. Noah Cameron is on the bump, and he has been solid this year. He carries a 2.68 ERA into action and has held opponents scoreless in three of his last six starts. On top of that, he is an NRFI bettor’s dream. He hasn’t allowed a first inning run since June – which carries six straight starts. The Twins are 19th in the league in first inning runs, so they’re hardly the squad that is going to upset that trend.
