MMA Regional Pick of the Week: Oktagon 74
Oktagon 74 Bantamweight Fight: Cecilie Bolander vs Lucia Szabová
Card Start Time: Saturday (8/9), 12:00pm EST (Internet PPV)
It’s not often in the world of MMA that we get a champion at underdog prices. Not only are we getting Bolander here as a dog, but it’s a pretty sizable one.
The likely reason is that Bolander is still pretty fresh in her professional career. She is just 4-1, but that fails to take two things into account. The first is the long amateur career that she had. Before she headed to the professional ranks, she had eight amateur fights – seven of which she won by submission. Additionally, it doesn’t take into account the level of those fights. She’s coming off back-to-back fights with 11-fight UFC veteran Lucie Pudilova – which is where she won the title.
Although she has a longer and more flawless record, Szabova hasn’t nearly faced that level of competition. She’s faced a number of late replacements and also had some issues with being held against the cage. She had some trouble getting off the cage against Aitana Álvarez, who has a record standing at 9-8.
Bolander’s judo background should take advantage of that weakness in Szabova’s game. Between that and how good she looked late in the fifth round last time out, I love the underdog tag.
