MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 8

Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – Apple TV+

In the top of the first, we’ll see the Astros attempt to ruin our NRFI fun against Cam Schlittler. There’s a couple reasons why I like that matchup. The first is just how bad Houston has been in the first inning. Over the course of the year, they’ve averaged just 0.37 first inning runs per game. That puts them ahead of only the Pirates in the entire league. The other reason why I like this one is because most of the trouble Schlittler has run into has been caused by his issues with walks. With that being said, the Astros rank 27th in that category and have been aggressive to a fault lately. That should help him put up a quiet first three outs.

In the bottom of the inning, we get a tough Yankees lineup. They’re third in the majors in runs per game, but that certainly isn’t due to their performance in their last handful of games. Over their last five, they’ve only put up a grand total of 11 runs (or 2.2 per game). That should make things easier for Hunter Brown, who likely doesn’t need help in the first place. He carries a 2.47 ERA into action on Friday and has allowed just one run in each of his last two starts.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 8: No (-135)

Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Royals get first hacks in this one and they are unlikely to score anytime soon. For starters, they have been just terrible at the plate. They rank 29th in the majors in runs scored with just 3.70 per game. Plus, they also are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. If that’s not bad enough to take regardless, check out who they’ll be looking to score on here. Joe Ryan gets the ball in this one. His 2.83 ERA should strike fear into their eyes. He’s also only allowed more than two runs in a game one time since June 20th.

In the bottom of the inning, we get another pitcher who is straight dealing. Seth Lugo has a 3.06 ERA this year. While that has gone up a bit lately, he did manage to keep the Blue Jays mostly at bay in his last one. Plus, it’s not as if the Twins are some kind of offensive juggernaut. They rank in the bottom third of runs scored in the majors. They’re also at that level when it comes to first inning scoring.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 8: No (-120)
