MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 7
Cincinnati Reds vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
One of my favorite days for an NRFI play is today – Paul Skenes day. Any time Skenes is on the bump, it’s usually a good sign that an NRFI will come through for us. His ERA is still just 2.02 on the year and he’s held his opponents scoreless in four of his last six starts. He’s got a good chance to keep that running as well. While the Reds are a solid hitting team this year, they have not been swinging the bat well lately. Over their last five games, they’ve put up just 14 total runs (or 2.8 runs per game). They’ve faced much easier pitching than they will on Thursday, so I expect more struggles at the plate here.
The other reason I really love Paul Skenes day is that the Pirates are the team that has to hit in the other half of the inning. They currently rank dead last in runs scored per game on the year with 3.54. They also aren’t even close to the 29th ranked Royals. The difference between the two teams is greater than the difference between the next four teams. All of that is bad for them and seeing Brady Singer might make it worse. He’s been outstanding in his last two starts – going 13.1 innings and allowing just one earned run. He’s also fanned 18 in that span, which means he should have little trouble with this Pirates lineup.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 7: No (-155)
Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Miami’s offense has been a nice surprise on the year – albeit not a surprise that we want to see in an NRFI situation. Despite outplaying projections, they still rank in the bottom half of the league in run scoring and are flirting with the bottom third. They’ll face the Braves latest pitching acquisition in Carlos Carrasco. Although he isn’t the first pitcher you might look to for an NRFI, he looked good in his debut for the squad. He gave them a scoreless first against the Reds and wound up giving them a quality start. He gets a step down with the bats here and should be able to get us three outs.
If the Marlins have been a good surprise with the bats this year, the Braves are on the other side of that spectrum. They have been shockingly bad, and currently rank 23rd in run scoring. There will be no Acuna in the lineup today, and no Austin Riley. To make matters even harder to score, they’ll face Eury Perez. In his last five starts, the Marlins starter has allowed just four earned runs – posting a 1.29 ERA in that span. It’s hard to imagine how this version of the Braves is going to do anything with that.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 7: No (-110)
