On Tuesday, we cashed early on one of our MLB NRFI and YRFI picks thanks to Joey Wentz. Finding the diamonds in the rough in the first inning work is not about the pitchers you trust, but about finding the ones you should trust more. There are a couple more just like that as we look to make our NRFI bets for August 6.
We’ve driven deep to find those guys – as well as disecting the hitting trends – to get you our NRFI and YRFI props for August 6. Come check out what we have cooked up for this slate of games.

MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 6
Kansas City Royals vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The first of the NRFI plays I like on Wednesday comes from historic Fenway Park. The Red Sox will send out their newest arm in the rotation, Dustin May, to try to get the tone started right. May is coming off a bit of a rough start last time out, but luckily for him that was against the Red Sox. He won’t be facing a team nearly as hot as they are when he sees the Royals. They’re in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They also haven’t scored in the first inning over their last six games. That’s not really a surprise with the way they hit. They currently rank 29th in the majors in overall runs scored with just 3.68 per game – only ahead of the Pirates.
It’s a bit harder to trust a team to keep the Red Sox quiet over the course of the first three outs. The Red Sox are a top five offense across just about every metric right now. So why is it that we like this NRFI play? The answer is two-fold. Firstly, they face Michael Wacha who has been pretty solid. He enters Wednesday’s action with a 3.38 ERA and hasn’t allowed more than one run in any of his last four starts. The second reason is that the Red Sox haven’t been consistent with their first inning scoring. While they put up a fat five spot on Monday, they have scored in the first inning in just two of their last six.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 6: No (-115)
Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Field – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the nightcap, I like the NRFI thanks to just how bad the White Sox have been at the plate. They are one of five Major League teams that have not cracked 4.00 runs per game this year. They currently sit at just 3.82 runs per game. That won’t get much easier in the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday as George Kirby will be on the bump. Kirby really came on in the month of July, posting a 3.07 ERA across the month and keeping two of his five opponents scoreless. We saw an uptick in his strikeout numbers too and those two things should help him post a scoreless first for us.
Seattle is definitely a better hitting team than the White Sox. However, despite hovering around the top ten in runs scored, they’re a below average team in the first inning. That should aid starter Jonathan Cannon, who doesn’t really have the numbers that you might trust for this kind of task. However, he has kept three of his last four opponents off the board in the first inning. That includes last game, where he worked through a first inning against the Phillies without a hit.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 6: No (-130)
