MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 5

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of first is one of those big names that we’re counting on. Freddy Peralta has been a huge piece of what the Brewers have been able to do this season. He’s rocking a 3.08 ERA coming into action on Tuesday and has kept three of his last four opponents to a run or less. Now he’ll get a set of bats that have been ridiculously quiet. The Braves are coming off of a five game game stretch where they put up just 19 runs. While that might not sound so bad, 12 of those runs came in one extra-inning game against the Reds – and eight of those runs came in one inning. When you take out that anomaly, they truly have looked bad at the plate and should be no issue for Peralta.

The bottom of the first in this one is the first of those sneaky starters. The Braves trot out Joey Wentz for another start while their rotation is reeling. Although his surface stats are nothing to write home about, he has looked solid lately. He’s coming off his best start of the year where he went 6.2 scoreless in Kansas City. It wasn’t just limiting runs that impressed me – he held them to only one hit as well. Even though the Brewers have an impressive record, it hasn’t been the first inning doing it for them. They rank just 19th in first inning runs this season and that should help Wentz get us the cash.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 5: No (-135)

Chicago White Sox vs. Seattle Mariners

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Field – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’re back in the top of the first in the nightcap with another ace. Bryan Woo toes the rubber for the Mariners on Tuesday and he’s been one of the very best parts of their season. He’s got a 3.11 ERA and has held seven of his last eight opponents to just two runs or fewer. That includes nearly half of those starts that were scoreless. Things should be even easier with the White Sox in town. They are one of five teams in the majors that is not averaging 4.00 runs per game at the plate. They likely won’t get closer to it in this one and certainly won’t early in the game.

The bottom of the inning brings us back to the sneaky good guys. Righty Davis Martin makes a start for the Southsiders on Tuesday. He has a respectable 3.84 ERA on the year, but it’s how he comes out of the gate that impresses me. Over his last four starts, he’s never really been in trouble in the first inning. He’s posted a clean frame in each of those last four starts, which includes showdowns with the Phillies, Rays, Astros and Royals. Seattle is a below average team at scoring in the first inning, so Martin should be able to get us through this one too.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 5: No (-140)
