MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 4
Kansas City Royals vs. Boston Red Sox
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Kicking off out NRFI plays for the day are the Royals. They’re one of the very worst teams in the league when it comes to scoring runs. They currnetly rank 29th – only ahead of the Pirates – with 3.67 runs per game. The first inning has also not been their friend. They rank in the bottom third of scoring in the opening frame. All that is a reason enough to predict a scoreless top of the first, and that’s without getting to the Brayan Bello of it all. He comes into action on Monday with a 3.19 ERA and has been even better as of late. He’s posted a sub-3.00 ERA in each of the last two months.
The bottom of the first will be a bit more of a sweat for us. For one, the Red Sox can swing the bats. They’re riding a five-game win streak in which they’ve scored 7.2 runs per game. However, I’m going to put our trust in Bailey Falter for three outs. His 3.73 ERA is already respectable, but he’s been even better lately. He’s coming off back-to-back outings, against the Giants and the Tigers, in which he allowed just one earned run each. Over those 12.0 innings, he also only allowed six hits with eight strikeouts. If he stays on that roll, he should cash us this NRFI play.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 4: No (-115)
New York Yankees vs. Texas Rangers
First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Yankees are another AL East team that can slug and often makes NRFI bettors scared. However, those bats have looked deflated a bit in the past couple games. They are fresh off of being swept by the Marlins and only scored three runs in the last two games of that series. Now they’ll need to face Patrick Corbin, who had himself a July. He didn’t allow more than two earned runs in any of his five starts in the month and lowered his ERA by half of a point. In the month of July, his ERA was 2.30 and that is the type of pitcher we want out there trying to keep the Yankees quiet.
We have a much less dangerous team in the bottom of the first inning. The Rangers currently rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. They’re even worse scoring across the entire game, where they rank 25th overall. Those numbers are unlikely to rise with Max Fried on the bump Monday. He enters action with a 2.62 ERA and legit strikeout stuff. While he’s had some issues with a blister lately, Texas is one of the worst teams in the league when to comes to drawing walks. As a result, I’m not too worried about him being able to locate enough to get them out.
