MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 2
Kansas City Royals vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 3:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
To kick off this NRFI, we have the Royals getting their hacks. They have not been strong at the plate this season. Despite having some gaudy numbers in their last few games, they still rank 29th in the majors in run scoring. Not only that, but they also struggle early in the game. They currently rank 21st with just 0.44 runs per game in the first inning. They’ll look to change that tune with Max Scherzer on the hill for the Blue Jays. While his surface numbers aren’t stellar, he looked to find something in his last start. He went 7.0 strong against Detroit last time out, and struck out 11 batters. Even more imortantly – for our purposes – he pitched a clean first and second inning with nobody reaching base in either of those innings.
The bottom of the inning should be even easier to relax during. For one, the Blue Jays have been shockingly bad early in the game. For one of the best teams in baseball, they simply can’t find runs early. They rank 23rd in first inning scoring and it should only get harder for them today. Noah Cameron toes the rubber for us in this one. He has quietly been a force for the Royals. In 14 starts this year, he’s still rocking a 2.44 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP. More impressively, he’s been even better than those numbers in July. In the month, he’s kept three of his four opponents scoreless and has put up a 1.84 ERA. He should have the stuff to bring this one home for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 2: No (-120)
New York Yankees vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
It’s always dangerous playing an NRFI with the Yankees at the plate, but we did it yesterday and it cashed for us. So, we’re doubling down on this one today. Some might be deterred by the fact that these two teams posted 25 runs on Friday. However, it is important to remember two things. Firstly, they arguably had a worse pitching matchup yesterday. Secondly, the game was scoreless entering the fourth inning, and neither team had a hit the first time through their order.
Trying to replicate that success for the Marlins is Eury Perez. Since returning from injury, he’s been his old self this year. He’s posted a 3.07 ERA on the year and put together an absurd July. In the month, he didn’t once give up more than two runs in a game and sported a 1.29 ERA. With some serious swing and miss stuff, I think he can get us three quick ones.
In the bottom of the inning, we get Cam Schlittler tossing. He’s another pitcher who maybe doesn’t have the surface numbers you might like just three starts into his career. However, all three of those starts have come against teams that are in the top 12 of the league in scoring. Now he’ll face a Miami team that is flirting with the bottom third of the league. I think we see his best start yet here and that should involve a clean first frame.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 2: No (-130)
