MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 1
New York Yankees vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Of course, it is a bit of a sweat when you play an NRFI with the Yankees involved. They are a top three team in the league in terms of run scoring, but I really like the pitching matchup in this one. Janson Junk has been phenomenal for the Marlins this season. He comes into action on Saturday with a 3.28 ERA on the year. He was even better in the month of July when his ERA was all the way down at 2.79. He also has been sharp in the first inning. He’s held his opponents scoreless in the last four first innings, and that includes some other good hitting teams. I think he can find three outs here against New York.
The bottom of the inning is way less of a sweat. Not only are the Marlins 20th in the majors in terms of run scoring, but they have also been much worse lately. In the last four games they’ve played, they’ve scored just 10 runs (or 2.5 per game). That includes just two in their win over the Cardinals on Wednesday. Things won’t get much easier for them when they get Carlos Rodon on the bump on Friday. He’s had a bit of a rough July, but still enters action on Friday with a 3.18 ERA. That should be enough to trust that he can take this one home for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 1: No (-135)
Texas Rangers vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 10:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
We played these two teams in an NRFI on Thursday and they came through for us. Not only did Kumar Rocker and George Kirby get it done for us on Thursday, but the offenses were pretty quiet early on. At the time of this going to print, neither team had found a run yet through 3.5 inning. We like that to keep going with the pitching matchup on Friday.
Logan Gilbert will be the first to toe the rubber in this one. He’s been solid as of late, with a 3.36 ERA and 105 strikeouts on the year. Furthermore, he was good in the month of July – posting a 3.04 ERA in the month. He’s held three of his last five opponents to one run or fewer. I like him to keep that going against Texas in this one.
The bottom of the inning sees Jack Leiter try to close this one out. His season-long stats have not been much to brag about, but he has managed to hold four of his last five opponents to two or less runs. He also hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game since June 17th. With just nine runs in their last four games (going into Thursday night), the Mariners don’t look to be the team to disrupt that.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 1: No (-130)
