MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 28
Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Cincinnati REds
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Dodgers are a potent offense, and it’s always dangerous to play the NRFI when they’re in it. However, I really like the looks of rookie Chase Burns – particularly when he’s working through the top part of a lineup. While his surface stats are a bit scary – a 6.65 ERA is hardly inspiring – but they look a lot difference when you focus on his first time through the order. He’s coming off a start against the Nationals where he got through the first nine hitters with just one baserunner and six strikeouts. He did almost the same to the Rockies, who had one hit and five strikeouts the first time through in the game prior. In fact, with the exception of a distasterous second start against the Red Sox, the first time people see him, he mows them down.
In the bottom of the first, Yoshinobu Yamamoto is on the bump. He carries a 2.55 ERA into action on Monday and has been even better for the Dodgers as of late. In four of his last five starts, he’s held his opponents to one or fewer runs. That’s a 1.82 ERA in that stretch, and we’ve seen better strikeouts numbers in there as well. The Reds are just outside of the top 10 in terms of run scoring, but have cooled a bit lately. They put up just two runs on Monday in a win over the Rays. That seems like an indicator that Yamamoto shouldn’t have many issues here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 28: No (-120)
Atlanta Braves vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Keeping the Braves quiet for any amount of time isn’t much of a task at the moment. Despite the big names in their batting order, they just can’t seem to find a way to stretch runs across. During their current five-game losing streak, they have managed just 12 total runs (1.4 per game). Trying to keep that going it 45-year old Rich Hill. While he might not inspire confidence at this stage of his career, he was solid against the Cubs in his season debut. He held them to just one earned run over 5.0 innings. He also gave us a scoreless first in that inning.
In the bottom of first, we’ll see a team that is actually struggling more on offense than the Braves. The Royals currently rank 29th in runs scored – only ahead of the Pirates. The 3.55 runs per game they’re scoring is dragged down by the fact that they’re in the bottom third of the league in first inning runs as well. Although Spencer Strider hasn’t been his Cy Young contending self this year, he has still been solid. He’s posted a mid-3.00 ERA in each of the last two months. That should be enough to get us the three quick outs that we need here.
