In the olden days, we’d have considered Paul Skenes a mediocre pitcher since he’s only 5-8 this season. But we’re smart enough now to know it’s not his fault that his team sucks. He’s in the top 10 in the majors in ERA (first), strikeouts (ninth), and WHIP (fifth). He’s pretty, pretty, pretty good.
Taking the over on Skenes’s K’s has been profitable for me this season, including in his All-Star Game start (over 1.5 strikeouts, baby!). However, I hesitated before playing it on Sunday, because his opponent, the Arizona Diamondbacks, doesn’t strike out too often (seventh-lowest in the majors).
However, Skenes has faced the Diamondbacks already this year, striking out seven in six innings of work back in May. And the Snakes seem to have activated liquidation mode, trading away their valuable veterans (Eugenio Suarez – you’re next). Let’s put our faith in Skenes.
