MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 27

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s a Paul Skenes day – which means I’m almost always into the NRFI. Sunday afternoon will be no different as the Diamondbacks visit PNC Park. It’s worth noting that the Diamondbacks are one of the better run scoring teams in the majors. However, I think I’d take Skenes to give us a clean first inning against the 1927 Yankees right now. His 1.91 ERA and 137 strikeouts has him, rightfully, neck-and-neck with Zack Wheeler for the NL Cy Young. Not that he needs the help, but it also doesn’t hurt that the Diamondbacks have been cold lately. They scored just eight runs over their last four games (going into Saturday). They also were scoreless through 7.0 innings at the time of this article going to press.

On the other side, we have an absolutely futile offense in Pittsburgh. They rank dead last in runs scored and dead last in first inning scoring. They are the only team in the league that doesn’t average at least a third of a run in the first inning. Zac Gallen gets the assignment of keeping that going. He’s been far from All-Star that he was back in 2023, when he also finished third in Cy Young voting. He’s been hit hard in each of his last two outings, but that’s just going to bring the number down for us and we’ll watch him get right against this bad lineup.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 27: No (TBD)

Cleveland Guardians vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

Cleveland is another strong hitting team – yet we’re still seeking an NRFI in that game on Sunday. That’s because they’re going to face Noah Cameron, who has been a huge surprise for the Royals this season. He carries a 2.61 ERA into action on Sunday and has been even hotter as of late. In his last four starts, he’s only allowed six total runs. That comes out to a 2.21 ERA in that stretch of games. He’s been good in the first inning as well. In fact, in the aforementioned four game stretch, he did not allow a single first inning run.

To wrap up this NRFI, we’ll need a solid outing from Joey Cantillo. Sure, his stats aren’t mind-blowing – although his 3.91 ERA is respectable. However, he has allowed just nine earned runs over his last five appearances. Really, the only thing that is giving him trouble recently has been the walks. On three different occasions, in those five game, he’s allowed three or more walks. Luckily for him, no team in the majors draws less walks than the Royals. Also lucky for him is the fact that the Royals are in the bottom third of the league in run scoring and first inning runs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 27: No (TBD)
