MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 24

Baltimore Orioles vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Orioles get first hacks on Thursday and they haven’t really been hacking much of anything. Their offense continues to be a disappointment and they’ve dropped four out of five as a result. Worse, they aren’t really scoring much in that span – with just 18 total runs in that time. Over the course of the season, the first inning has been a particular sore spot for the birds. They rank 26th in the majors in first inning scoring. Now they’ll have to try to trun around all of those trends against Logan Allen. While Allen’s season-long numbers might not look great, he has held opponents to three or fewer runs in seven straight games. In that span, his ERA has been a respectable 3.57.

The bottom of the inning has a team that is hitting quite a bit better. However, while the Guardians have some solid numbers lately, they have actually been worse than Baltimore when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Their 0.37 first inning runs per game puts them in 27th – just one spot behind the Orioles. They’ll have to face 41-year old Charlie Morton. Much like Allen, his season-long numbers are kind of rough. He also got beat up by the Rays in his last outing. If you look at the five starts before that one, he was on a roll though. He had allowed just seven earned runs in those five starts and posted a 2.30 ERA in that time. I like his chances to get three quick outs for us here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 24: No (-120)

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Blue Jays start off this NRFI effort and they’re another team we’ve seen struggle on the offensive side of things. They are currently ranked in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring and first inning scoring. While they have been scoring some runs recently, that should all stop with Reese Olson on the bump. He carries a 2.71 ERA into Thursday’s action and he’s been even better lately. over his last five starts, he’s allowed just six total earned runs. That comes out to a 2.22 ERA in that run. If anyone has the juice to slow that down, it won’t be Toronto.

Detroit is on the complete flipside of that coin. They have stellar numbers on the year, but has really fallen apart offensively in the last week. Over their last five games, they’ve only managed to string together nine total runs (1.8 per game). They’ll have to figure out Eric Lauer, who has quietly posted a 2.80 ERA this year. In 61.0 innings, he’s fanned 65 batters and has had at least six in three straight games. He should be able to keep the Tigers off the board for at least one inning to close this thing out.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 24: No (-120)
