MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 23

New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – Prime Video

It’s always a little dicey when you look for the NRFI with the Yankees at the plate. However, the bats haven’t exactly been firing on all cylinders over the last few games. They’ve scored just 10 runs in their last three games combined. Additionally, they have a tough pitching matchup on Wednesday in Chris Bassitt. In his last three appearances, Bassitt has allowed just one earned run – sporting a 0.69 ERA in that span. He also faced the Yankees earlier this month and looked solid in that outing. He picked up the win in that game and, more importantly to us, kept them quiet the first time through their order.

Despite being a team that has been solid at the plate all season, the Blue Jays have actually struggled in the first inning. On the year, they rank in the bottom third of the league with just 0.45 first inning runs per game. All-Star Max Fried will do everything in his power to keep that trend alive. His 2.43 ERA has him in the top ten of the majors amongst qualified starters. Plus, when he faced the Blue Jays earlier this month, he blanked them for the first three innings. All we’d need is three outs here to cash and I think he should be able to provide us with just that.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 23: No (-120)

Chicago White Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays

First Pitch – 7:35 pm EST
George M. Steinbrenner Field – Tampa, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

The White Sox are always an easy pick for an NRFI. They have surprisingly good pitching and bats that are usually pretty quiet. Currently, those bats rank 27th in the majors in terms of runs scored. On the year, they’ve managed just 3.63 runs per game. Taj Bradley will be tasked with maintaining that pace and he’s done well as of late. He has allowed just one earned run over his last two games and has held opponents to one or less in three of his last five innings. Despite having some stats that might not look great on the surface, his ERA this month is just 2.04 and he should be able to get us through the first here.

The Rays haven’t exactly been setting the world on fire with their swings lately either. They have scored just ten total runs in their last three games, and that’s come against some less than impressive teams. Additionally, they are a below average team when it comes to scoring first inning runs, and they haven’t done so in any of their last four games. Jonathan Cannon is on the bump for the White Sox, trying to keep the Rays’ dry spell going. He has held opponents to two or less runs in each of his last four starts. That’s a 2.66 ERA in that stretch and enough for me to trust the NRFI here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 23: No (-105)
