MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 22
Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
We rode this game to an NRFI on Monday, and we’re ready to let it ride on Tuesday. Sure, the Tigers won’t have to face Paul Skenes in this one – who just so happened to blank them through 6.0 – but that doesn’t mean they have a cake walk here. Mitch Keller will be on the bump Tuesday and he has been lights out for the Pirates lately. In the last four games (25.0 innings), he’s allowed just four total earned runs. That comes out to a 1.44 ERA in that span and it’s been even lower than that in the month of July. While the Tigers have a strong lineup, I think Keller should be able to grab up three quick outs in this one.
As we mentioned yesterday, the Pirates are one of the worst hitting teams in the majors. They rank dead last in the majors in both runs scored per game and first inning runs per game (3.33 and 0.32 respectively). In their last five games, they’ve managed to score just 12 total runs (2.4 per game) and it won’t get any easier for them on Tuesday. Casey Mize toes the rubber on Tuesday and he’s been sharp. He has a 3.15 ERA on the year and has kept the majority of his recent opponents quiet. Six of his last seven opponents have scored two or less runs against him. The Pirates aren’t the team that’s going to change that trend.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 22: No (-145)
milwaukee Brewers vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Both of these two teams have been great at the plate. Both currently rank in the top 10 of runs scored in the majors, but this play is far more about the pitching than it is about the hitting.
The top of the first has Logan Gilbert heading to the hill. His season long stats have not been amazing this year, but he has shown signs of his prior brilliance. July has seen him put up a 2.93 ERA and against some of the best hitting teams in the majors. He’s faced the Tigers, Yankees and Royals in that stretch of games, and is coming off maybe his best start of the year. Last week, he held the Tigers without an earned run over 6.0 innings.
Current NL Rookie of the Year favorite Jacob Misiorowski tries to close this one out for us. After making the All-Star game his sixth big league appearance, he looks to continue to build on a crazy good start. He has a sub-3.00 ERA and just mowed down the Dodgers in his last game. In that one, he went 6.0 deep and allowed just one run. He did all of that while striking out 12 batters. In his five starts, he’s only allowed one first inning run. He should be able to keep that going here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 22: No (-170)
