MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 11
Miami Marlins vs. Baltimore Orioles
First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Canden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’ll kick off Friday’s NRFI plays with the Marlins at the plate. They are a below average team when it comes to first inning scoring and haven’t scored a first inning run in any of their last six games. Things won’t get that much easier for them here in Canden Yards with Dean Kramer on the bump. Kramer had a bit of a tough outing last time out, but was on a role prior to that. He had three straight starts going into that one (two against Tampa Bay and one against the Yankees), and had allowed just two earned runs in that stretch. So even with that rough outing last time, he’s posting a 2.74 ERA in his last four. That should be enough to keep the Marlins rough patch going.
Baltimore enters Friday on the heels of a big sweep of the Mets in a double header. That doesn’t excuse the fact that they’ve been terrible in the first inning this year. They rank 28th in the majors with just 0.34 first inning runs per game. They also haven’t scored in the first over their last five games. Now they’ll have to try to break that trend against Edward Cabrera. He carries a 3.33 ERA into action on Friday with 80 strikeouts in 78.1 innings. He’s also allowed two or fewer runs in each of his last eight starts.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 11: No (-110)
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Pirates are currently on a six-game losing streak. While that’s already a bad enough sign, the level of their offense has been a different kind of bad. In those games, they’ve managed just nine total runs (or 1.5 runs per game). It won’t be easy to break that trend against Joe Ryan, who has a 2.73 ERA. Not only that, but he ranks in the top 15 in the majors in terms of strikeouts. With him allowing just three total runs over his last three starts (19.0 innings), I don’t think there’s much chance that this Pirates squad gets to him in the first inning.
The bottom of the inning sees a much better team at the plate. The Twins are still 24th in the majors in first inning scoring, but looking much better than the Pirates. The bad news for them is that Friday is a Paul Skenes day. The Pirates phenom may not be racking up the wins as of late, but he does have a 1.94 ERA. He has had scoreless outings in four of his last six starts. He’s coming off 5.0 scoreless against the Mariners with 10 strikeouts. He should be able to finish off a clean first frame for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 11: No (-180)
