MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 10
Washington Nationals vs. St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
The first of our NRFI plays will see the Nationals come to the plate first. The Nationals have been an average team this year in terms of scoring runs. The current MLB average is 4.38 per game and they’re putting up 4.42. They’ll get a chance to put up a first inning run against Miles Mikolas, who has been shelled the last couple of times out. However, if you look at the two months prior to that start, Mikolas was posting a 3.59 ERA – very respectable. While his flyball numbers are a little concerning, I like his chances here for a bounceback thanks to the matchup and knowing he has the stuff in there.
The bottom of the first should be an easier one as the Cardinals have struggled all season in the first inning. They currently rank 27th in MLB with 0.35 first inning runs per game. They’ll face a pitcher with similar issues in Michael Soroka. He got hammered by the Red Sox the last time out, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to give up on him. Prior to that, he had held the Angels to just one run over 6.0 innings. The game before that he went 5.0 scoreless against the Dodgers before running into minor trouble. With that recent track record, he should be able to get us a quick three outs here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 10: No (-105)
Atlanta Braves vs. Athletics
First Pitch – 9:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Braves offense exploded on Wednesday with four runs in the first and a nine run performance overall. That’s the offense everybody expected from the Braves this year. However, just because we’ve seen it, doesn’t mean it’s here permanently. The Braves are still a bottom third team when it comes to scoring in the first inning and in the game overall. JP Sears should be able to return them to that stagnant state yet again. He hasn’t allowed a run in either of his last two starts (11.2 innings) and those starts came against the Giants and the Yankees – much better hitting teams.
The bottom of the inning gives us a Spencer Strider start. While his surface stats don’t show quite what we’ve expected from him, he has looked great as of late. Over his last five starts, he’s posted a 2.70 ERA and has fanned 39 batters in 30.0 innings. That seems pretty close to his old self. With the Athletics being a team that is below average when it comes to scoring runs, Strider should be able to get off on the right foot Thursday.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 10: No (+115)
