MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 21
Texas Rangers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – FS1
We kick off the top of the first in this NRFI bid with the Rangers getting their hacks. They’ve struggled to get their offense going this season, ranking in the bottom third of the league in runs per game. Their 3.63 per game has them slotted in 26th across the league and they’ve actually been worse as of late. Over their last five games, they’ve only managed 13 runs (or 2.6 per game). They’ll have a tough time overcoming that trend as they face Mitch Keller. He’s coming off a solid start against the hot-hitting Cubs where he held them to just two runs over 6.0 innings.
While the Rangers offense has been bad, they haven’t been quite as bad as the Pirates. Their 3.21 runs per game has then in dead last in the majors. They’re only a whisker better in the first inning, where they rank 29th in the majors with 0.32 runs per frame. They’ll face Vanderbilt product Kumar Rocker. He hasn’t been amazing on the season, but he is coming off of 5.0 shutout innings against the White Sox. At this point, I’d take an NRFI if the Pirates were facing a pitching machine, so Rocker should be able to handle it.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 21: No (-110)
Kansas City Royals vs. San Diego Padres
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Broadcast – FOX
The Royals get this game kicking, as they face Dylan Cease. Cease’s numbers are definitely higher than the Padres were hoping for and he got hit around by the Dodgers a bit last time out. However, he’s also had some brilliant outings. Just one start prior, he fanned 11 Dodgers over 7.0 scoreless and only allowed three hits. He’ll need just a fraction of that stuff as he faces Kansas City. They currently are 29th in the majors in runs scored – just 0.2 runs per game ahead of the Pirates.
In the bottom of the inning, we’ll get rookie sensation Noah Cameron on the bump. Over seven starts this year, he’s only allowed more than one earned run once, and that was against the Yankees. He’s fresh off of 5.0 shutout innings against the Athletics – fanning 7 in the process. The Padres, despite the big names in their lineup, have not really thrilled with the bats. They rank in the bottom half of the league in terms of runs scored. As a result, I trust that Cameron can take care of business.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 21: No (-130)
