MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 9
Miami Marlins vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – FS1
The Pirates gave us an NRFI on Sunday, and we’re looking for more from them on Monday. Granted, they do not have the same level of starter on the bump. Mike Burrows is certainly no Paul Skenes. However, he is coming off the best start of his life. He held Houston scoreless over 5.1 innings, while fanning six batters and allowing no walks. The Marlins should be even easier for him to blank. Despite being a bit better than expected, they still rank in the bottom third of the league in runs per game.
The bottom of the inning is a bit of a crapshoot. The Marlins have activated Eury Perez for his first start of the season. He was once thought to be one of their very best prospects and a potential future ace. He hasn’t been as healthy as they needed for that progression, but the stuff is clearly there. The best way for them to get Perez going will be to prop him up against the Pirates. They rank 28th in first inning runs per game with just 0.33, and 29th in overall runs with just 3.15 per game.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 9: No (-115)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Busch Stadium – St. Louis, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
Just like the Pirates, the Blue Jays gave us our second NRFI success on Sunday and we’ll trust them again on Monday. They come to the plate in the first with just a slightly better chance to score than the Pirates. They rank 27th in first inning runs with just 0.34 per game. They’ll face Andre Pallante, who got absolutely shelled by the Royals the last time he went out there. However, that isn’t detering me from this NRFI. He went the whole month of May without giving up a first inning run and I think he can get another streak started here.
In the bottom of the first, we have Jose Berrios on the hill. He carries a 3.67 ERA into action on Monday and has been even better lately. He has allowed just one earned run over his last two outings (12.0 innings). In that span, he’s picked up 14 strikeouts as well. Those games were also against more formidable offenses than the Cardinals. They rank 29th in first inning runs, which is quite a bit behind where the Phillies are slugging. As a result, I think Berrios should be able to shut the door on an empty first frame for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 9: No (-125)
