MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 8

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

This cross-state showdown is perhaps the most obvious of the NRFI plays for Sunday’s action. A big part of that is because it’s a Paul Skenes day. Skenes carries a 2.05 ERA into action in this one and has been extra dialed in lately. It’s been over a month since the last time he gave up multiple earned runs in a start. He’s also coming off of one of his very best outings of the year – holding the Astros to one run over 8.0 innings. While the Phillies may be a tough team to keep quiet, Skenes should be able to give us an empty frame.

The bottom of the first should be just as easy for us – this time for two reasons. The first of those reasons is the hitting of the Pirates. They rank 28th in the majors in scoring in the first inning with just 0.34 runs per game. They actually rank lower across the entire game. They rank 29th in scoring overall with just 3.17 per game. The second of the reasons is that we’ll see Christopher Sanchez fot he home squad. He’s got a 3.15 ERA on the season and has 74 strikeouts in just 65.2 innings. The big lefty should be able to shut the door on this opening frame for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 8: No (-180)

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Target Field  – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first sees the Blue Jays come to the plate. While they’ve been a middle of the pack team in terms of run scoring, they’ve really struggled early in the game. They’ve put up just 0.34 runs per game in the first, putting them in 27th in the majors. It’ll get even harder for them on Sunday with Joe Ryan dealing the way that he has. He’s sporting a 2.91 ERA on the year and is coming off a May that saw him post 1.86 in the stat sheet. With the early woes of Toronto, I’m not worried about Ryan giving up one early.

In the bottom of the first, we’ll see a pitcher who has struggled a bit more. Bowden Francis was ripped apart by the Phillies last time out. Despite that, I like the run he had in the opening frame prior. He went the whole month of May (five starts) without giving up a run in the first inning. Although the Twins have been hitting the ball lately, they still rank 20th in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first. That should help Francis put up one blank frame for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 8: No (-120)
