My best bet for Saturday comes from the curtain jerker at UFC 316, so check that 6:00 PM Eastern start time. Things kick off with a hastily arranged lightweight bout between MarQuel Mederos and Mark Choinski. Mederos was scheduled to fight last week, but fell ill a few days before the fight and pulled out. Instead, he’s lined him up with UFC newcomer Choinski this week.
This is a bad introduction to the UFC for the grapple-heavy Choinski. While “The Shark” is 8-0, he hasn’t fought anywhere near the level of competition that Mederos has, and hasn’t fought anyone who hits as hard as Mederos does. Choinski is going to have to eat too many shots to try to get his grappling going to win this fight. This is especially daunting considering it’s his UFC debut, on a big PPV card, and very short notice.
