MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 1

Detroit Tigers vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, the very formidable Tigers lineup gets the first hacks. While they are a solid hitting team, particularly in terms of run scoring, I still like an empty first frame here thanks to the pitching matchup. Lefty Kris Bubic toes the rubber for the Royals on Sunday. He carries a 1.45 ERA into action on Sunday, but has pitched even better lately. In the month of May, he threw 32.1 innings while allowing just two runs. That comes out to a 0.56 ERA in the month of May. His strikeout numbers are also up a touch. He’s struck out 9 batters in two of his last three starts.

Attempting to close out the NRFI in the first for us will be Keider Montero. His surface numbers look quite a bit worse than Bubic, but his numbers as a starter have been outstanding. In his last three starts (17.1 innings), he’s allowed just two total runs. That a 1.04 ERA in that stretch. This Royals offense is unlikely to be the team to change that. They rank 28th in the majors in terms of runs score – 3.29 per game. Also, they rank 26th in first inning runs on the year with just 0.36 per first frame.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 1: No (-120)

Tampa Bay rays vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – FOX

The second NRFI selection for this Sunday comes from Texas. Tampa Bay comes to the plate first and their lineup has been hovering right around average for the year. As a result, this play is much more about how we feel about the pitcher. Hunter Brown is the defender of this NRFI and he’s been nothing short of amazing this year. He ranks in the top 10 in wins, ERA and strikeouts across the majors right now. He’s also allowed one or less earned run in three of his last four starts. I think he should be able to get us an easy three to start this thing.

Closing out our second NRFI will be Taj Bradley. He’s allowed two or less earned runs in five of his last six starts. That consistency give me some confidence, particularly against this Astros offense. They continue to be the worst in the majors when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They score just 0.24 per first inning and are a wide margin behind the next worst team. In addition to all of that, they are in the bottom third of the league in scoring in general. As a result, we’ll take what should be a confortable NRFI here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 1: No (-140)
