MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 22

San Diego Padres vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first sees the Padres go to the plate against Bowden Francis. This will likely be the scariest part of the NRFI being how good the Padares are. Bowden Francis hasn’t had the best numbers this season either, but he has been better lately. He’s seen a solid uptick in his strikeouts in the last two games, grabbing 11 strikeouts in 11.1 innings. Additionally, he hasn’t allowed a first inning run in any of his last three starts. He’s probably not going to quiet them for the whole game, but I like his chance to get a quick three outs.

The bottom of the inning will be far less of a sweat. For one, the Blue Jays are far worse hitting this year. They rank 27th in the majors in first inning runs. They average 0.33 runs per game in the opening frame. It doesn’t get much better over the game where they’re 21st in the majors. It’ll also be less sweaty as we’re getting Steven Kolek on the bump. He has a 2.33 ERA in his three starts this season, which includes a complete game shutout of the Rockies.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 22: No (-110)

Los Angeles Angels vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 3:35 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Luis Severino toes the rubber to start our second NRFI option here. He’s been up and down this season, but is coming off perhaps the best start of his season. He faced the Giants and held them scoreless over 6.0 innings. In that start, he struck out five and only walked one. That should hold up against the Angels who have been slightly below average when it comes to scoring runs. They rank 17th in the majors in runs per game at 4.21 per game.

To close out our second NRFI, we’ll see the resurgent Tyler Anderson. He carries a 3.04 ERA into action on Thursday and has been looking even sharper as of late. The Athletics are a middle of the pack team in terms of their run scoring. However, they had a fast start and seem to be slowing. As a result, I think Anderson can slam the door on it for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 22: No (+100)
