MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 21

Baltimore Orioles vs. Milwaukee Brewers

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV

This NRFI bid starts with the Orioles at the plate where they’ve been downright atrocious. Not only are they in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning, but they’ve been bad for all nine innings. They rank 25th in runs per game overall with just 3.76. Things won’t be easy against Chad Patrick either. He carries a 3.35 ERA into Wednesday’s action and has yet to be hit really hard yet this year. He has kept all of his opponents under three earned runs and has been under three in more than 50% of them.

After we get a clean top of the inning, Tomoyuki Sugano comes on to try to button this one up for us. He’s quickly become one of my favorite NRFI guys in the league. The fact that he doesn’t have overpowering stuff leaves the books to underestimate how good he is. However, he does have a 3.08 ERA and does a great job of enducing weak contact. Milwaukee is also 29th in the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Between those facts and how low these odds are, we have to be in on this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 21: No (-115)

Seattle Mariners vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Another pitcher who I’ve been digging on the NRFI is Shane Smith. He’ll be first to toe the rubber in this one on Wednesday. The first big reason why I like him is the 2.05 ERA.  He’s been great at mowing down batters with nearly one an inning and has only allowed two home runs all season (48.1 innings). While the Mariners have been surging as of late, they haven’t been in the first inning. They haven’t scored a first inning run in three straight going into Tuesday night’s action. As a result, I feel comfortable trusting Smith.

The bottom of the first has the second reason I like Shane Smith’s NRFI chances – the White Sox bats. They’re 29th in runs in the majors with 3.29 per game. That’s is already a good sign. We’ll get to add to that sign with a starter who has been solid – Logan Evans. Evans has quietly posted a 2.57 ERA and is coming off his best outing of the season. He threw 6.0 innings against a tough Padres lineup and didn’t allow a single run. He also only walked one in that game. After doing that, it feels like he should be able to shut down Chicago.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 21: No (-125)
