MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 16

Chicago White Sox vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

The crosstown matchup may not have the pitching matchup we’d like for an NRFI – which is precisely why you can get plus-money on it. However, I think it’s a sneaky good one for a clean inning.

It’ll start with rookie Cade Huton on the bump. This will be just his second major league start of his career and the end line from the first wasn’t beautiful. It was solid when you that he faced the Mets. Additionally, he keep them blank through the first three innings. It wasn’t until they got their second look at him that he got in trouble. The White Sox rank 28th in runs scored per game with 3.39. As a result, I expect Huton to start hot again.

The Cubs are a betting hitting team for sure, but I think we’re seeing a solid arm in the bottom of the inning too. Shane Smith has dazzled for the Southsiders on the season. He carries a 2.08 ERA into Friday’s action and is coming off his best performance yet. In his last one, he held the Marlins scoreless in a 6.0 inning performance. He also saw an uptick in his strikeout numbers as well – fanning seven in the effort.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 16: No (+120)

Atlanta Braves vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

While there may not have been big names toeing the rubber in the last game, this one is star studded.

Garrett Crochet is first to the hill along with his 1.93 ERA. He seems like an early frontrunner for the AL Cy Young award, espeicially when you factor in his strikeouts. He’s struck out 65 batters on the year in just 56.0 innings. He’s also kept opponents to just two earned runs over his last two games. The Braves haven’t been the hottest bats, even though they have looked better. As a result, I think he’ll keep them quiet here.

The Braves send their Cy Young candidate to the mound as well – Chris Sale. While Sale’s early season has his stats out of position for that award, he has been his onld self in the last five games. In every single one of those, he’s held opponents to two or fewer runs. The strikeout stuff is through the roof as well. He’s fanned 28 batters in his last 19.1 innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 16: No (-150)
