MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 7
Cincinnati Reds vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game seems like a gift wrap for the NRFI because neither of these teams seem like they can score any runs in this series. Over the course of the first two games, the teams have combined for just six runs in regulation – and you only get to add one for extra innings. That already is a good start for an empty first frame.
I also like the fact that Grant Holmes is getting the ball for Atlanta. He’s coming off a great start against the Dodgers, where he held them to just two earned runs over 6.0 innings. He also struck out nine batters in that game and has struck out more than one per inning on the year.
I also like the pitching situation for the Reds. They’ll throw Hunter Greene out there on Wednesday. He’s been sharp this year, holding together a 2.53 ERA. He has exploded with the strikeouts, notching 55 of them in just 42.2 innings this year. Add in that the Braves rank 22nd in first inning runs and 18th in runs overall and it just feels like this is going to be another low scoring affair.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 7: No (-140)
Baltimore Orioles vs. Minnesota Twins
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV
We’re deviating from our normal NRFI work to bring you one of the few YRFIs I’ve liked this year. The Twins send Simeon Woods Richardson out to face this Orioles offense. While the Orioles haven’t been great hitters so far, Woods Richardson hasn’t been great either. He’s sporting a 4.03 ERA and looked to have control problems last game. In 4.2 innings of work, he walked five batters. If he can’t find his stuff, it shouldn’t matter how rough the Orioles have been at the plate lately, they’ll have chances to score.
In the bottom of the inning, it should be a slam dunk for a run. The Orioles have returned to using Charlie Morton as a starter after three appearances in the bullpen. In his last 14.1 innings, he’s allowed 17 earned runs. While some pitchers have stats like that when they’ve been lit up once, Morton has been touched up constantly on the season. His ERA sits at 9.76 and he carries a 2.20 WHIP into Wednesday. For those reasons, I’m in on the YRFI here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 7: Yes (-130)
