MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 3
Athletics vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
In the top of the first, the Atheltics will get their hacks up against Max Meyer. The Athletics are a below average offense on the year and their task doesn’t get any easier here. Max Meyer has been solid troughout the year. He has just a 3.18 ERA, and that’s largely been inflated by the rough outing he had last time out. Prior to that, he had allowed just three runs over his last three outings. The other big piece of my trust in Meyer comes from his strikeouts. He has 28 strikeouts in just 16.0 innings over his last three starts. He should be able to pencil in three outs for us here.
Tyring to close out our NRFI is Osvaldo Bido. Bido may not have the surface numbers that Meyer does, but he’s been outstanding in most of his starts. In fact, he’s held opponents to two or less earned runs in five of his six starts on the year. On top of that, he has 7+ strikeouts in four straight starts. Pair that with a Marlins roster who places in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring in the first inning and you have a juicy NRFI to play.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 3: No (-120)
Kansas City Royals vs. Baltimore Orioles
First Pitch – 7:15 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – FOX
The top of the first sees the next start of Tomoyuki Sugano. He’s rocking a 3.00 ERA on the year, but may be coming off of his very best start of the year. He held the Yankees scoreless over 5.0 innings and managed to rack up eight strikeouts in the process. He had only struck out nine prior to the game in five starts, so that showed a marked improvement in that one. The Royals don’t nearly strike out as many times as the Yankees, but they are also not nearly the big fly threat the Yankees are. In fact, they aren’t the big fly threat that any team is – as they rank 30th in MLB in terms of dingers per game. If Sugano can keep them in the park, he should get through the first with no harm.
Closing out the NRFI is Kris Bubic. Right now, I’d consider Bubis for an NRFI if he was pitching in the All-Star Game – that’s how good he’s been as of late. His ERA sits at 2.25 and it’s not like he’s facing a team that has been on track to exploit him. Baltimore is 18th in the majors in terms of runs scored. They are putting up just 4.00 runs per game. With Bubic on the hill, I feel comfortable expecting them to come up empty in inning one.
