MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 16

Atlanta Braves vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 1:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Braves offense has picked up a bit, but they are still having a pretty brutal year considering the expectations. They currently rank 24th in MLB when it comes to scoring runs with just 3.53 per game. While I do expect them to be better at some point, that point is likely not while facing Chris Bassitt. He’s looked phenomenal this year, allowing just two earned runs over 18.1 innings (for just a 0.98 ERA). He’s also fanned 21 batters over that time frame. His work should be enough to keep the top of this Braves lineup quiet on Wednesday.

The Blue Jays haven’t exactly blown our socks off with their hitting either. They are also in the bottom third of the league when it comes to run scoring – putting up 4.06 runs per game. And, of course, there’s the elephant in the room – or rather on the rubber. Spencer Strider returns to the Braves rotation on Wednesday and will make his first start. If his rehap starts and Spring Training were any indication, you can expect to see the version of him that made him a Cy Young candidate in this one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 16: No (-135)

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Miami Marlins

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
loanDepot Park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Perhaps this game sees a few less big name pitchers than the one before, but each starter in this one has looked good enough. Max Meyer gets the ball rolling on the NRFI first as he faces this Arizona lineup. On the year, he’s kept a mere 2.00 ERA going and looks even sharper as of late. In his last outing, he held the Mets scoreless over 6.1 innings. He’s done all of this while striking out more than a batter per inning. The Diamondbacks are 22nd in scoring runs in the first inning with just 0.41 per game. Meyer should be able to lower that by a touch.

The Marlins are not all that better at scoring in the first inning. They rank just one spot higher at 21st in the league with 0.44 per game. They’re also not getting an easy pitching matchup either. Brandon Pfaadt has settled in nicely this season. He carries a 3.50 ERA, which he lowered by holding the Orioles scoreless for 6.0 innings last time out. I like his chances to shut the door on this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 16: No (-120)
