Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC 313
UFC Flyweight Fight: Joshua Van vs Rei Tsuruya
Start Time: Saturday 6:30pm EST (ESPN+)
One of my favorite spots on this card is Joshua Van. The man is known for wearing down his opponents by his relentless movement, incredible pace, and his ability to get up when he’s taken down. His hands are sharp and, apart from one issue with Charles Johnson, his striking defense has held up.
He’ll fight Tsuruya, who is much more limited in the depth of his game. It’s takedowns or bust for the Japanese flyweight, and that’s not a good style to bring when your opponent doesn’t settle and has an amazing motor.
Expect Van to weather the early wrestling and outclass Tsuruya on the feet. I wouldn’t count out a finish here for him as well.
