MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 17

New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 5:08 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, Ohio
Broadcast – TBS

Starting off our first NRFI of the day is Matthew Boyd. While the Guardians aren’t using him deep into games during this postseason, he has been very sharp in the limited time he’s been in. He’s gone 6.2 innings over two starts with 10 strikeouts and no earned runs. More importantly, he gave up no hits in either of the first innings that he pitched. Being that we only need three outs out of him, his performance gives me all the confidence I need.

In the bottom of the first we’ll see Clarke Schmidt toe the rubber. He has not been nearly as good as Boyd has – giving up nine runs in his last three starts (14.0 innings pitched). However, the bulk of those runs have come later in the game. He went four scoreless last time out, and two scoreless the game before that. The third of the games in question did see him give up a second inning run, but he has yet to blow the NRFI over that span. As a result, I can get behind him keeping that trend going.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 17: No (-160)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 8:08 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – FOX

Jose Quintana takes the ball for the Mets to start off game four at Citi Field. He’s been something of a revelation for them this year – and postseason specifically. He has allowed just two earned runs over two postseason starts. That’s no shock either given the September that he had. He carried a 0.72 ERA through that month and went scoreless in three of his four outings. He should be able to keep the big bopper on the Dodgers in check for three quick ones.

In the bottom half, Yoshinobu Yamamoto will look to round out our second NRFI. He got shelled early in the Padres series to the point where we had to question his health. Since then, he dialed it back in and gives me the confidence I need for this one. He threw five scoreless last time out with just two hits allowed. Along with the Mets being held scoreless in two of three games in this series, this turnaround helps guide me to another NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 17: No (-145)
