MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 10

Cleveland Guardians vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 6:08 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, Michigan
Broadcast – TNT

While the Tigers don’t have an announced starter for Thursday’s game yet, I still lean to the NRFI. A big part of that is a fade of the Guardians’ bats in this series. They’ve scored just 2.3 runs per game in this series and that’s largely on the shoulders of being shut out in back-to-back games. It isn’t just the quality starters keeping this Cleveland squad quiet at this point. They have been held scoreless over 8.0 innings of relief pitchers in the last two games. Regardless of who comes out, I think the Guardians’ bats will start slow.

In the bottom of the first, Tanner Bibee will toe the rubber. He took the ball in game one as well and managed to put up a big zero. Not only did he keep Detroit scoreless in the first inning, but he kept them off the board for all 4.2 innings of his start. That’s consistent with how good he was down the stretch this season – maintaining a 2.64 ERA in the month of September. Given these recent results, I expect him to close out this NRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 10: No (TBD)

New York Yankees vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:08 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, Missouri
Broadcast – TBS

In the nightcap, I’m going with a rare playoff YRFI. Both of these pitchers threw in game one and neither looked particularly sharp. While the NRFI hit in that game, Michael Wacha struggled against the Yankees’ bats. He allowed seven of the 19 batters he faced to reach base and gave up three runs in 4.0 innings. That includes allowing the first two hitters to reach (and in scoring position), only to work his way out.

Gerrit Cole also looked like he was on shaky footing in that game. The Royals hit three balls hard in the first and had little to show for it. They later picked things up quite a bit – getting seven hits and four runs over five innings. Cole also saw his lowest strikeout total of any 5.0+ inning start this year. All of these things, along with my doubts about Wacha, lead me to like the YRFI here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 10: Yes (TBD)
