MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 6

Washington Nationals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, the Nationals will face off with Luis Ortiz. The Pirates righty has looked phenomenal since moving into the rotation from the bullpen. He’s lowered his ERA all the way down to 3.19 and is carrying a WHIP just over 1.00. He’s been even better in his last two starts. In both of those two starts he’s allowed no runs while throwing 6.0 innings. He’s also logged five strikeouts in each of those contests. With the run he’s on and the fact the Nationals rank 28th in first inning runs, there’s no reason to think they’ll get on the board early here.

The Pirates hitting hasn’t been much to write home about this year either. They rank 23rd in runs scored and are even worse in the first inning – where they rank 29th. They’ll also have to face a sneaky good pitcher in DJ Herz. While he got hit a little by the Cubs in his last outing, he had been seven consecutive outings prior without allowing more than two earned. Some of those games were against top hitting teams, so this Pirates squad shouldn’t be an issue.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 6: No (-120)

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 7:20 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, Georgia
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, this should be an easy start to our NRFI. The Blue Jays have been a below average offensive team all year and, despite the resurgence of Baby Vlad, seems to be closing out the year on a down note. Six of their last eight games has seen the club stay under 3.5 runs on the day. Facing Max Fried shouldn’t help matters for them. He’s kept his last four opponents under that number at well.  Additionally, he’s allowed just one first inning run in that span, and it was to the Phillies who are a far better hitting team than Toronto.

The Braves have picked up their hitting quite a bit as of late, but they are still not touting the fully feared lineup. They also are still coming in as part of the bottom half of the league in run scoring. While they scored in the first off of Colorado on Thursday, they have a far tougher pitching matchup to deal with on Friday with Kevin Gausman. He’s allowed just six earned runs in his last four starts (24.2 innings). He’s also logged 24 strikeouts in that span, which should help him out of any jams he might get into.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 6: No (-130)
