MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 4

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Mets looked a little better at the plate early in the series against the Red Sox, but it doesn’t cover up the fact that they had a rough series against the Sox of another color. In a three-game set with the 100+ loss White Sox, the Mets managed just 12 total runs. Now they’ll face Tanner Houck, who is coming off a nice outing against the Tigers where he went 6.0 scoreless innings. His ERA has trended up in the last month or so, but it’s only up to 3.12 – making him a guy I’d still trust with an NRFI in this spot.

After getting ripped apart for a couple games, the Mets moved Tylor Megill into the bullpen and then he missed some time. He earned another start to close August and allowed just one run over 5.1 innings. In that game, he showed a re-worked sinker that should lead to less flyballs. That’s exactly what he needs against this Red Sox teams. They haven’t scored much recently and when they do it has been with dingers. I expect Megill to be able to keep them in the park to finish this one up for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 4: No (-110)

Seattle Mariners vs. Oakland Athletics

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Oakland Coliseum – Oakland, California
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, we see this Mariners offense who can’t seem to get anything going. They rank 26th in runs scored, while also ranking 30th in strikeouts and 30th in team batting average. I’d take just about any pitcher against them in an NRFI situation, but especially JP Sears, who has looked solid lately. Although the Brewers hit him around quite a bit, he had a great August. In five games, he held a 3.06 ERA in the month. If he can keep something resembling that production going, he should get the first three easy for us here.

In the bottom of the inning, the Athletics aren’t much better in terms of scoring. They rank 25th in the league and have a much worse pitching matchup to deal with. George Kirby has carried a 3.63 ERA to this part of the season. He’s had a bit of a rough month, but I still like what he’s been getting in terms of ground balls. I think that helps to keep the Athletics in the park and helps keep out NRFI in tact.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 4: No (TBD)
