Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick ‘Em Plays – August 29

Pete Alonso – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Going into Wednesday’s action, Alonso had been hot. He has surpassed this projection in three of his last five games on the back of six hits – including two for extra bases. It’s not just his hot bat that I like. I also like the pitching matchup here. Alonso will face Ryne Nelson who he has five career plate appearances against. In that span, he has three hits with two homers. That clearly shows he sees the ball well out of Nelson’s hand.

Brady Singer – Higher than 0.5 First Inn. Strikeouts

Singer has seen a nice uptick in strikeouts as of late.  On the season, he’s averaging 0.96 strikeouts per inning. That alone would be enough to play this projection, but then you look at what he’s done lately. In his last three starts (16.0 innings), he’s struck out 20 batters. That’s good for 1.25 batters per inning. Even with the Astros being a tough team to strikeout, he should come up with one here.

Daulton Varsho – Higher than 1.5 Total Bases

Varsho may have had his nine-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday, but he was on an incredible streak prior to that. The last four games prior had seem him over the projection in every one. If you want to stretch it back to the beginning of the streak, he had 16 hits in those nine games and slugged .605. I think we see a bounce back game here on Thursday.
