MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 27
San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals
First Pitch – 7:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first is where the real sweat is going to be here. The Padres are a solid hitting team, ranking 11th in runs scored. Knowing that and looking at Miles Mikolas’ 5.19 ERA, you may think I’m crazy for liking the NRFI here. However, Mikolas has two things going for him. Firstly, he’s coming off a nice start where he held the Brewers – one of the better hitting teams in the majors – scoreless over 6.0 innings. Secondly, he hasn’t allowed a first inning run in two months. That’s a stretch of nine starts where he hasn’t allowed one in the first. I’ll take him to make that an even ten.
We have much less of a sweat to look forward to in the bottom of the first. Dylan Cease takes the bump against a Cardinals team that hasn’t really impressed with that bats. They are in the bottom third of the league in both runs scored and first inning runs. Cease shouldn’t help matters there. It’s been since July 2nd that he’s allowed more than three runs in a start. I think he should be able to wrap this one up for us on Tuesday.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 27: No (TBD)
San Francisco Giants vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Giants look to disrupt our second NRFI first, but I’ve got a fair bit of confidence that they won’t be able to do so. Not only are they just a middle of the pack team in terms of offense, but they are terrible early in the game. They rank 25th in first inning runs, just a tenth of a run away from dead last. Facing standout rookie Tobias Myers shouldn’t ease the issue. He comes into action on Tuesday with a 2.87 ERA and having allowed just six runs in his last five starts. He should breeze throughout the game, but definitely early on.
While the Brewers are a much better offense, they too have had their struggles in the first inning. They’re ranked 9th in the league in runs scored, but slide all the way down to the bottom half of the league when talking about the first inning. Logan Webb is certainly not the pushover they need to correct that trend. He’s only allowed four earned runs in his last five starts and has seen an uptick in his strikeout numbers in the last couple games as well. He should take the NRFI home for us.
